Torre della Castagna - Florence

When You book a guided tour in Florence Tours in Florence - Tuscany, with us You"ll realize  how beautiful and magic this town is.

Torre della Castagna (Chestnuts Tower), also known as Mouth Iron is one of the ancient towers of the historical center of Florence, among the best  preserved, located in Piazza San Martino corner of Via Dante Alighieri. The tower is very old and has a varied history. Already built in 1038 was given on  that date by the Emperor Conrad II the nuns of the Badia Fiorentina, in defense of the monastery. The Tower was the first meeting place of the Priors of  Florence from 1282 until the completion of the Bargello Palace (the historical function is also demonstrated by a plaque on the modern Via Alighieri road).

The name of the Tower derives from the fact that they used to put chestnuts in special bags during the vote. The tower, with its origin above the parties  was saved by its shortening in the second half of the thirteenth century. The tower is quadrangular base and is quite tall and slender. A restoration of  1921 has shown the most ancient forms.

Today the ground floor and first floor (with mezzanine) are the property of the National Veterans and Veterans G. Garibaldi, who has set up inside a small  museum of relics of the Risorgimento, that can be visited on Thursday afternoon. The upper floors belong to the Florence Court and cannot be visited. The  portal on the ground floor has a double arch, also called "senese". To the right a plaque mentions the fourth paragraph of the first book of the Chronicle  of Dino Compagni with a reference to tower, while in Via Alighieri road a second plaque marks the venue place of the Government"s priors in the tower.
