Palazzo Vecchio - Florence

It represents the best combination of  civil architecture of the fourteenth century and it is one of the most popular civic buildings of Italy. Originally called the Palazzo dei Priori Novo, it   became in the fifteenth century "Palazzo della Signoria", named after the main body of the Florentine Republic, then in 1540 it became the Palazzo Ducale,  when Duke Cosimo I de "Medici made it his residence, and finally it assumed the name "Palazzo Vecchio" in 1565 when the court of Duke Cosimo moved to theÂ
"new" Palazzo Pitti.
From 1865 to 1871 it was the seat of the Italian Parliament, and now houses the Mayor of Florence and various municipal offices. There is also a museum that  allows you to explore the magnificent rooms and where are works by Michelangelo, Donatello, Verrocchio, etc. The palace gained new importance when it became  the seat of government in the period 1865-71, when Florence became capital of the Kingdom of Italy. Under the arches of the gallery in 1353 it were painted  a series of badges that symbolize some particular aspects of the Florentine Republic and still photograph, in a sense, the political situation of fourteenthÂ
century. The series of nine coats of arms is repeated twice on the front and two coats are also found on the left side. The first one you come from the left  is the red cross on a white field, representing the insignia of the Florentine people and indicates the public affairs in Florence. Then we come to the  Florentine lily red on a white field, the current Florence"s landmark.
On the main facade there is the Tower of Arnolfo, one of the emblems of the city. The tower of Palazzo Vecchio was built around 1310 when the body of the  building was almost finished. High around 94 meters, the tower is not centered on the facade but is decentralized to the south side of the same
