This state was formed after merging former princely states like Jaipur, Marwar, Mewar, Kota, Bundi and Bikaner. Jaipur: Founded by Maharja Jai Singh II, Jaipur is one of the popular city of Rajasthan. Covered by brilliant forts and palaces, this city is quite mesmerizing. Often referred as pink city, it is the capital of Rajasthan. Jaipur and its surrounding areas is just like a walking museum. At every corner you will find yourself engrossed in the history of this city. It is also home to some of the most popular historical monuments of India. Established by Maharana Udai Singh II in 1568, Udaipur houses some fascinating palaces. Located in the midst of the Pichola lake these palaces have become an important travel attraction of city. Jaisalmer: Located in the heart of the great Thar desert, Jaisalmer is one of the popular travel attraction of state. This city is well known for the beautiful desert and sand dunes. Founded in the year 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, it is also popular as golden city. There are many majestic forts, palaces and havelis in Jaisalmer. This city hosts popular desert festival every year in the month of January. During this festival the rich culture of region is displayed to the outside world. Jodhpur: Situated at the edge of Thar desert, Jodhpur is an amazing city. This former capital of the Marwar state is just like a oasis in the barren desert land. Different variety of thorny shrubs are located all over the area. This city was one of the major trading centre around 16th century. This city houses exquisite palaces, forts and temples. The important travel attractions are Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, Umaid Bhawan palace, Maha Mandir temple, etc. Mehrangarh fort is the most impressive of all the monuments in Johdpur. There are many elegant structures located inside this fort.
